Step 1
Familiarize yourself with sailing basics. Although the RYA Competent Crew Certification is designed for the beginning sailor, the intensity of the course makes having some background in sailing basics very helpful. Learn the basic terms of sailing, such as "port" and "starboard," and also learn one or two of sailing's most basic knots such as the bowline and figure eight.
-
Step 2
Set aside the time. The Competent Crew Certification covers a lot of material in a relatively short amount of time. Still, the time requirement of the course is hefty, with an option of either five consecutive days or three weekends. The five consecutive days option is cheaper than the three weekend version so if you can manage it you'll save some money.

Step 3
Find a school. To receive the official RYA certification you need to take the course from the RYA or one of its satellite schools. There are schools all around the world, particularly in places that have ties to the British Commonwealth. Check out the RYA's website to find locations and dates of the RYA Competent Crew Certification course that best suit you.

Step 4
Come prepared. While there is some class work, most of the Competent Crew Certification takes place at sea. Anti-nausea medication, warm and waterproof clothing, a hat and sunglasses will all make your experience a lot more pleasant. So, come to the course prepared to do some serious sailing in order to get the most out of the certification course.
