Buttons can be a great addition to craft projects of all kinds. Buttons can create a nice color accent and add dimension to a piece. Buttons are easy to work with and can be one of the more affordable embellishments available to crafters. With a little thread or strong adhesive, you can start dotting your designs with buttons.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Save shirt buttons and extra buttons you get with new clothing. Snip buttons off clothes before you recycle them. There's no need to buy buttons at the craft store when you can collect them for free at home. Keep them in a jar near your craft supplies so that you can see them and use them when so inspired.

  2. Step 2

Stitch buttons onto your design with a needle and thread. If you aren't much for sewing, try another approach. Use glue dots to fasten your button to the paper. A glue gun will also work. If you don't want to sew but like that look, try button brads; they give you the look without the work.

  3. Step 3

Create a frame with buttons by putting them along edges of images. You can also use them to spell out words, make lines or create a mosaic feel.

  4. Step 4

Use buttons to represent objects. Depending on your design, you could use button embellishments in a multitude of ways. Buttons make great flower centers, and a cluster of buttons atop ribbons could be balloons or flowers.

  5. Step 5

Make loop closures and use a button to keep paper flaps closed with a pretty ribbon looped or wrapped around it.
