To err is human. To apologize is divine. It is important to apologize the right way, especially in business matters. A business apology is somewhat different from a personal apology, but some of the same rules apply. No matter what the mistake, a proper apology can help to save your dignity and possibly your job.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
State what you are apologizing for. It is human nature to try and cover over the mistakes we make. In business, you must apologize in a very direct and concise manner, and this includes stating clearly what it is that your apology is referring to. Begin with the reason for your apology, and then go on to the actual apology.
Step2
Explain why the error was made. Give honest and sincere reasons as to why the mistake happened, and own up to it. Don't try to pawn it off on someone else. Even if you missed a deadline because a co-worker could not get you their piece of the project finished in time, you must accept responsibility for your actions.
Step3
Make amends. Dictate your plan to make up for the mistake that you made. Give clear cut directions as to what you want to do to correct the problem, and prevent it from happening in the future.
Step4
Convey emotions when you apologize in business. Explain that you are very sorry and make the apology heartfelt. Apologies only work if they are sincere and honestly given.
Step5
Ask for forgiveness. Even if you have no chance of glossing over your error, convey that the forgiveness of the person(s) involved means a lot to you. It may help to try and make a connection with the reader on a personal level.
