Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Impart the importance of respect. Before you can teach your children to be kind to seniors, you first have to let them know that seniors deserve their respect. While children don't have to necessarily agree with everything their elders say, they should respect the fact that senior citizens have a lot to offer by way of knowledge and experience.
Step2
Teach your children by providing a solid example of kindness. Remember that your children are always watching you. If they see you disrespecting senior citizens, losing your patience or using derogatory terms, then they will, too.
Step3
Start lessons in kindness at home. Many families may have already lost grandparents, but for those families that are fortunate enough to have one or all of them, grandparents are a great place to begin teaching children to be kind to seniors. No matter what your relationship is with your parents or in-laws, you should always keep that separate from your children's interactions with them. Have them send cards, make phone calls, send emails or even little gifts.
Step4
Instruct children on basic etiquette toward seniors. Tell children that when they're out in public and in the company of senior citizens, they should always offer to open the door for seniors, offer them a seat or offer to carry packages. They might not actually need the help, but it's best to ask.
Step5
Volunteer and take your children with you. There are so many seniors who live in nursing homes, assisted living centers or alone as shut-ins. These people need help with groceries, cleaning, repairs or simply need company. Volunteer your time and talents and bring your children along, and they'll see first-hand the happiness they can bring to seniors.
