Maintenance is critical if you want your vacuum cleaner to last longer. You also want it to continue cleaning your carpets effectively. In order to keep your vacuum cleaner working, you must clean and replace some of its components from time to time. Make sure that your vacuum cleaner is turned off and unplugged before you maintain it to avoid any electrical injuries.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Change the vacuum cleaner bag if it gets too full of debris and it starts to clog. Replacement bags can be found at any store that sells your particular vacuum cleaner, or you can order them online. Follow the instructions according to your brand and model to remove the old bag and replace it with the new one. If you own a bagless vacuum cleaner, empty the container that traps dust, and change its filter at least than once a year.

  2. Step 2

Hand wash the filters, wands and crevice tool with cold water and mild detergent. Let the filters and cleaning tools air dry before putting them back onto the vacuum cleaner. Filters can also be replaced by ordering online or by buying them in a department store. Clean dust from other parts of your vacuum cleaner, such as the hose, by using a damp cloth and allowing it to dry.

  3. Step 3

Remove debris from the agitator shield, which is usually located on the underside or bottom of your vacuum. This will help the vacuum maintain its suction. Lay the vacuum cleaner down so that you can inspect the agitator.

  4. Step 4

Replace the headlight of your vacuum cleaner if the old light burns out. Get a 12-volt bulb with a wedge base, or something that is compatible to your brand. Headlights on the vacuum cleaner are necessary if you're cleaning rooms with low lighting or under furniture.

  5. Step 5

Check the belt that helps the agitator to rotate on your vacuum cleaner. Buy a replacement if your old belt is cracked or clogged. Also, change the brush roll that comes with the agitator so that the cleaner can continue to pick up dirt and debris.
