Soapwort is a low growing perennial shrub. Its root can be used to make herbal medicines and natural soaps and shampoos that clean gently. The following steps will show you how to make a natural shampoo out of soapwort root.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • Sauce pan with lid
  • 1 ½ tablespoons soapwort root
  • 2 teaspoons lemon verbena
  • Nylon strainer
  • Bottle with lid
  1. Step 1

Place 1 ½ tablespoons of dried and chopped soapwort root into 2 cups of distilled water and let it soak overnight. You can find soapwort root at many health or natural food stores or online.

  2. Step 2

Put the 2 cups of distilled water into a sauce pan with the soaked soapwort root and bring it to a boil.

  3. Step 3

Cover the pan with the pan lid and let it sit covered for 20 minutes as it simmers on a very low setting. Remove the pan from the heat.

  4. Step 4

Add 2 teaspoons of the herb lemon verbena to give the shampoo a fresh lemon scent. Mix it up well.

  5. Step 5

Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Pour the cooled mixture through a nylon strainer or a piece of muslin. Discard the solid material that you have strained out and keep the liquid.

  6. Step 6

Pour the liquid into a clean bottle with a lid.

Tips & Warnings
  • This soapwort shampoo must be used in 8 to 10 days. After that it begins to spoil and must be thrown out.
  • Instead of the lemon verbena, you can add a couple drops of lavender or rosemary to scent your shampoo.
  • Test for allergy before using this shampoo by placing a small amount of it on your skin on the inside of your elbow and leave it on the skin for 48 hours.
