The stigma of a retirement facility is slowly lifting to reveal a relaxing lifestyle that can be custom made for what you want out of retirement. Some of these housing options are expensive, though, and not conducive to a fixed income. Use these steps to learn how to find affordable retirement housing.

1. Know what you want. Make a list of the amenities and features you are looking for in retirement housing. Put a star or mark next to the amenities you can't compromise on, such as nurse care or mobility services. This will give you bargaining room when shopping around.
2. Decide on the type of building you are considering, if you have a preference. Some are high rise buildings while others have more separated buildings with full apartments in them. The cost can vary greatly, so this is another area to be flexible if you can.
3. Take a tour of some of the facilities you are considering. Make sure to get all the information on cost. This should include not only the housing aspect, but other activities, dining options, in-house care or other needs and wants. Compare only complete cost analysis information against each other, as this will give you a more true representation of what will be expected.
4. Consider the state. If you are on a fixed income, there are state options and housing for low income seniors. Every state has a low income housing office with special services for seniors. Contact your local government for the correct information on these services and options.
5. Negotiate financing. Some facilities offer financing options that may lower your monthly payment and rent. If you have a large amount of security, great credit or large down payment, you may have a little bargaining room with the facility finance office.
