How to Fix Dry Rot in a Bathroom

Fixing dry rot in a bathroom can be done in a few days or even over a weekend, especially if you have the basic carpentry skills, tools and materials needed for the job. The rot is caused from a leak and over time will cause the wood to deteriorate. Mold can also become an issue which is why it is important to fix bathroom dry rot immediately.

Instructions

1. Determine where the dry rot is located. In bathrooms, dry rot is usually found under the tub, tile or carpet, around the toilet or anywhere near a leaky fixture. Lay out a drop cloth in areas where you do not want dust or any further damage to occur. You may want to cover mirrors and other fixtures to prevent scratching from tools or objects.

2. Remove all rotted material. There may be a leak near or around the tub, toilet or sink area. The tub may need to come out, as well as the toilet. Cabinets may also need to be removed.

3. Find the source of the leak, replace pipes or fixtures as needed and remove all trash. Check to make sure that the source of the leak is gone and will not return to cause more dry rot.

4. Consider using insulation which can be found at most lumber yards. Once an insulation board is placed down, caulk can be used to seal the board. You may prefer using tape rather than caulk.

5. Replace the flooring with pressure treated wood that will last longer and prevent rotting. If unable to find the pressure treated wood you can replace it with marine plywood which is usually available at most lumber yards.

6. Add the sub flooring next and choose the appropriate floor covering, which may be tile, laminate, vinyl or even carpet. Be sure all material is sealed and completely dry before walking across it.
