Japanese culture has created great architecture and cuisine that is appreciated in many cultures. A lesser known Japanese export is the bento box. This unique invention is seen mostly in Japanese restaurants with a variety of flavorful foods displayed in it. Bento boxes may be created at home with customized touches that give a new twist on an old design.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Find a box. This may take some trial and error to find one that feels right. The box may be as elaborate or a simple as desired. Initially, it would be good to start simple and use something along the line of an eight inch by eleven inch plastic container that is about two inches deep.
Step2
Decide to use dividers or smaller containers. There will be a series of compartments inside the bento box. Usually, the compartments range in size to one another with a 4:3:2:1 ratio. This is not written in stone. The bento box may be divided up with washable plastic dividers or smaller containers that fit inside the box. Containers may be easier for refills and food changes.
Step3
Keep a small area available for sauces or dips. Purchase a very small mini bottle with a container for things like soy sauces or ranch dressing. The bento box is great for many types of cuisine. It's good for on-the-go snackers.
Step4
Make some fun, easy dishes. Salads, fruit and faux sushi may all go into one box for a fun, light meal. Other bento box dishes may include rice, pasta and mini muffins. The possibilities are as endless as the creativity that goes into the box.
