One of the mysteries of health care is hypertension in children. Some of the causes of this phenomenon are still unknown. There are, however, some ways to combat this disease in children. Parents must be prudent in their efforts to deal with this in order to prevent further complications. There are a few crucial steps that may be taken.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Get checkups regularly. It is important to understand a major cause of childhood hypertension is when another disease goes untreated. Heart disease and kidney disease in children often cause hypertension. Take the steps to get these diseases diagnosed as soon as possible.
Step2
Keep childhood weight down. As with adults, obesity often leads to hypertension among other issues. Provide regular exercise and a healthy diet to maintain a proper weight. Avoid the excessive sweets that children often crave.
Step3
Know the family history. Hypertension is more likely when there is a history of it in the family. Specifically, African Americans have a higher chance of acquiring the disease. Take precautions when the chances are already high.
Step4
Avoid medications and high-stress situations. Steroids and oral contraceptives are known to lead to high blood pressure. Children need a healthy and peaceful environment in order to avoid many health hazards including hypertension.
Step5
Contact organizations that specialize in providing this type of information. The American Academy of Pediatrics can be found at medem.com. The American Heart Association is found at americanheart.org.
