How to Use a Spatula

A spatula is a kitchen essential. It is used for all sorts of things from flipping pancakes and omelets to removing chicken from a pan. Spatulas are easy to use, once you get the hang of it. However, anticipate a few messy kitchen experiences until you get used to using your spatula. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Position the spatula so that the handle is resting in the palm of your hand. Your hand should be turned so that underside of your wrist and the palm of your hand are facing the ceiling, and the spatula should be right-side up.

    • 2

Wrap your fingers around the handle so that your four fingers are gripping the handle and your thumb is flat against the side of the spatula.

    • 3

Hold the pot or pan you are using with your opposite hand.

    • 4

Slide the flat end of the spatula under the food that needs to be removed. Once the spatula is under the food, slowly lift the food from the pot or pan.

    • 5

Flip your wrist in toward your body so that your thumb and fingers end up in opposite positions. The back of your hand should now be facing the ceiling and the food should be flipped over and resting in your pot or pan.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are handling a hot pot or pan, you must use a pot holder to protect the hand holding the hot surface.

  • If you are using your spatula to remove an item instead of flipping, follow steps 1 through 4. Instead of flipping the food, move your spatula to a plate or serving platter, set the flat end of the spatula on the surface and tip the spatula away from you while you slide it out from under the food.

  • Use a wooden or rubber spatula when using non-stick cookware.
