If you have old floppy disks, do not throw them away. Create fun and entertaining craft projects using these disks. One project is the Starship Enterprise seen in Star Trek. The Starship Enterprise is the spaceship used in the Star Trek series. Making a Starship Enterprise out of a floppy disk is one way to recycle the floppy disks and have fun at the same time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Get or find a floppy disk with a metal slide. The floppy disks with the plastic slides do not work for this project. The metal slide is the piece at the bottom of the disk that moves back and forth.
Step2
Remove the slide from the outside of the floppy disk and pull the disk itself apart. Take out the round data disk. This looks much like a CD. Take the metal piece out of the middle of the data disk.
Step3
Cut the metal strips on the slide at the edge that touches the wider piece of the slide. These are two strips that connect the top, thinner piece of metal to the other side to create a small box. When you cut them, bend them out. They need to look like small wings.
Step4
Bend both sides of the wider piece of metal above where the uncut side connects to the small pieces and where the large pieces are located. Make sure the bend is at a 90-degree angle. This creates the large, flat portion at the rear of the Starship Enterprise.
Step5
Fold up the outside edges of the metal piece you just bent. Bend it 1/2 inch from the edge to create the small up-turned wings of the Enterprise.
Step6
Cut small slits halfway up the narrow sides on the outside of the slide to place the round saucer section of the Enterprise. Make sure it is big enough for the metal round piece to slide into the slits.
Step7
Insert the metal disk into the slits until it is secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use glue to hold the disk in place. For an added touch, paint the metal to make it look more like the Starship Enterprise.
  • Cut small wedges from the side wings to add more detail.
