Scented candles are not only romantic, but they can add wonderful fragrances to rooms. They're great to have during a blackout or to add a atmosphere to your living environment. Candles are wonderful, but you must be careful—the melted wax can drip onto your floor, table or other furniture, leaving unwanted wax stains in the process. Here's how to remove unwanted wax stains with ammonia.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Sweep away any existing dust or debris from the waxy area. You don't want to create a bigger mess by getting unnecessary dirt mixed in with the ammonia and water mixture.
Step2
Mix approximately ½ cup of ammonia in the bucket of warm water. Warm water is preferred to cold water, as the warmth will assist in melting the wax. Depending on how large or thick the wax build up, you may need to add more ammonia to successfully remove the wax.
Step3
Dip the sponge or cloth into the bucket with the ammonia mixture. Wear your rubber gloves. Squeeze the excess liquid from the sponge and rub the waxed area. You may need to apply a little pressure to remove the wax.
Step4
Repeat until the wax is completely gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a clean sponge with fresh water to clear the remnants of the ammonia water.
  • Ammonia is a highly toxic chemical. Keep the room well-ventilated during the entire process. Ventilate it until the ammonia smell is gone.
