Your handlebars can make or break your ride. If you buy the incorrect handlebars for your riding style you can be very uncomfortable and end up with a sore back and an frustrating ride. Besides the appearance of your handlebars there are other things you need to take into consideration. Follow these steps to learn what to look for when you buy handlebars for your bike.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what shape of handle bars you're looking for. There are P.G.H, double butted, D.H.H, Riser and several others. The shape of the handlebar is going to depend on your riding style and the type of bike you ride.

  2. Step 2

Think about how long you're going to be riding at a time. Your riding comfort for different periods of time is going to be dependent upon the rise of the handlebar you choose.

  3. Step 3

Determine what material you want your bike handlebars made of. There are composite handlebars which are very light and strong. You can buy aluminum handlebars which aren't affected by scratches and hold up well during a crash.

  4. Step 4

Consider how much you want to spend on handlebars. The prices vary greatly depending upon the material and shape as well as brand name. Top-of-the-line, brand name handlebars will be the most expensive but may also offer the best performance.

  5. Step 5

Figure out if you want to buy used or new handlebars. You can buy perfectly good used handlebars if you don't want to spend a lot of money. If you race a bike professionally then you may want to consider buying the top-of-the-line, high performance handlebars.
