When cutting metal or plastic with a saw it results in rough, unfinished edges. These edges have burrs surrounding them that can cause difficulty in completing your project. You can use a deburring tool to smooth out these rough edges resulting in a clean, smooth finish as well as a polished appearance. Follow these steps to learn how to use a deburring tool.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of material you will be deburring. Deburring tools can debur steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, brass and plastics.

  2. Step 2

Attach a blade that is recommended for the material that you will be deburring. Visit deburringtools.com to determine the type of blade that you will need to use for your job.

  3. Step 3

Trim the deburring tool shaft to the length necessary for the job. If your shaft is too long you can lose control of the deburring tool.

  4. Step 4

Set the RPM of the deburring tool. The faster the RPM the faster the material is removed. A suggested setting for the RPM is between 2000 and 8000.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the feed rate. The feed rate of the deburring tool determines how much material will be removed on each pass and the shape that is created at the intersection of the object and the tool.

  6. Step 6

Turn on the deburring tool. Make small, quick passes on the object being deburred.

Tips & Warnings
  • Harder materials require a faster RPM. A slower rpm results in a nicer finish.
  • For small jobs use a manual deburring tool. It is the size of a small chisel and is great for a quick fix.
