How to Ignore an Obnoxious Child

Everyone has been there. Obnoxious kids seem to be everywhere. Whether it is yelling and screaming, knocking things over or playing with things that they should leave alone these children can set our nerves on edge. Ignoring their behavior can often times be hard. It is especially hard if it is your own child.

Instructions

    • 1

Do something you know is calming for yourself. Many experts advise you to ignore your child. You child's behavior is to obtain a response from you. The calmer you are, the easier to thwart them. Counting to ten is often a solution. Reciting the alphabet to yourself can help. Try reciting the alphabet backwards when you need even more time.

    • 2

Remove yourself from the situation. If your child, or any child, is being obnoxious, you may just want to walk away. Make sure they are safe. Then give yourself some time away.

    • 3

Use headphones to block the child's noise. This is very effective. The child knows they aren't getting your attention. You can still keep them in your sight, but you are listening to something else. Consider soothing sounds.

    • 4

Give the child a time out in a different room. If it is impossible for you to leave the room to ignore the child, inform the child that they either stop or take it somewhere else. You will have to be more of an enforcer here than someone ignoring the child.

    • 5

Treat the cause of the child being obnoxious. Changing the child's environment may work. Consider if the child has gotten enough sleep or if they are hungry.

    • 6

Follow-up on the incident. When your child has been obnoxious talk to them after the incident. When you both have had a chance to recover, ask them why. Work out a solution for both of you to avoid the situation in the future.

Tips & Warnings

  • Children respond to consistency. If they can get your attention by being obnoxious, they will keep trying that method over. You have to consistently ignore the behavior.

  • Seek the advice of a medical professional. If you feel that your child has other problems and is not just acting out, you may want to consult your pediatrician. They will be better able to give you advice or diagnose any underlying problems.
