How to Put a Child to Bed

1
Make a calm environment before your bedtime routine. Help the child wind down from the busy day. Quiet activities before bed such as reading or puzzles may help them prepare for the upcoming bedtime.
-
2
Establish a routine. Maybe this will include a night time bath, followed by a bedtime story. Stick to this routine, so the child knows what to expect.

3
Ensure your house is quiet. A child who hears the TV, loud noises, laughing and talking may not want to go to bed. They want to be part of what is going on. Make bedtime a quiet time through the whole house.
-
4
Make sure the child feels safe. A nightlight may help. Checking in on your child every few minutes giving them praise for staying in their bed and going to sleep may also work.
-
5
Make certain your child stays in bed. If your child gets out of bed, put them back. This may take a few times. Be consistent. You can shut the door or install a baby gate to keep them in their room and safe.

Tips & Warnings
Keep in mind that your child is an individual. What works for one child may not work when putting a different child to bed. Find a routine and method that works for them.
Never put a child to bed with a bottle or tippy cup. The drink will leave a residue that can lead to tooth decay.
