How to Choose a NOCSAE Approved Softball Mask

Currently softball helmets leave batters' faces exposed. Taking a hit there could mean years of corrective surgery. That's why many leagues are now requiring players to wear masks too and those masks must be approved by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Choose the level of protection you want. The NOCSAE has approved softball masks with only two bars to allow better viewing during batting. But there are also many softball masks that provide more bars across your face for better protection.
Step2
Decide what material you want the mask made from. Masks are predominantly made from wire but there are a few plastic ones on the market. All of these meet NOCSAE standards so choose the one that works best for you.
Step3
Look for the label. Every mask approved by the NOCSAE must be labeled "Meets NOCSAE Standards." Without this label, you won't be able to wear your mask in the game.
Step4
Buy a mask that works with your batting helmet. Masks don't fit every helmet out there—they are designed to work with specific batting helmets. Know what brand your batting helmet is and how the mask must be attached before making any purchases.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your batting helmet must also be labeled "Meets NOCSAE Standards" even though it's on the mask too. The only exception to this rule is masks and helmets manufactured as one piece although the NOCSAE has stated that as of Dec. 1, 2004 they don't know of any helmets designed this way.
  • Don't count on being able to wear your old helmet or mask. When leagues make NOCSAE approval a rule they won't grandfather in old equipment. You'll be required to update your gear.
  • Take this rule seriously and don't wait to get an NOCSAE approved softball mask. Playing without one can get you ejected from the game.
