Instructions

    • 1

Cut the silk into squares that are large enough to wrap around an egg. Cut pieces of white fabric large enough to cover the entire silk wrapped egg. Cut enough squares to cover all of the eggs you will dye.

    • 2

Place the egg on the silk with the print side facing the shell. Wrap the silk around the egg.

    • 3

Place the wrapped egg in the center of a square of white material. Wrap the white material around the egg and secure it at the top with a rubber band or twist tie.

    • 4

Gently place the wrapped eggs in an enamel or glass pot. Cover the eggs with water. Add 3 tablespoons of vinegar to the water.

    • 5

Place the pot on the stove, and bring the water to a boil. Boil the eggs for 20 minutes or until the eggs are cooked to your liking.

    • 6

Remove the eggs from the pan and set them aside until they are cool. Remove the white cloth and silk from the eggs.

    • 7

Dip a paper towel in shortening. Lightly rub shortening on the eggs to give them a glossy sheen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use old bed sheets, curtains, shirts or scraps of muslin for the white fabric.

  • Use several pieces of silk that are smaller than the eggs to create a collage.

  • Refrigerate eggs that will be eaten immediately after cooling.
