Seedlings started in eggshells make quaint spring or Easter gifts. You don't have to remove the seedlings from the shell before planting them because the shell is biodegradable. Start these seeds a few weeks before spring so that they can be sprouted before Easter.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Crack off the top quarter of each egg with a knife or scissors. Drain the egg from the shell.

  2. Step 2

Poke a drainage hole in the bottom of each shell using a pin. Set the egg shells in an egg carton.

  3. Step 3

Use a spoon to fill each shell with potting mix. Leave a half inch of space at the top of each shell.

  4. Step 4

Plant 2 to 3 seeds in each shell. Follow the seed packet instructions for specific planting directions.

  5. Step 5

Remove the shells from the carton one at a time to water the plants. Let excess water drain into a bowl or the sink.

  6. Step 6

Place the eggs in a sunny window to germinate. Pinch off unhealthy starts after the seeds begin to grow.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dye the eggshells before filling them with dirt.
  • Give an entire carton of eggshell seedlings with each plant identified by a tiny sign stuck in the dirt on a toothpick.
