Things You'll Need:
- Tulip bulbs
- Mulch
-
Step 1
Pick a spot in your yard that has full sun or partial shade for planting your tulips. You can plant tulips in a perrenial garden or an annual garden since they bloom in the early spring before other plants begin to bloom.
-
Step 2
Buy tulips that will fit the space you've designated for your tulip garden. Dwarf tulips do well in spaces that don't have as much head room, such as in window boxes, containers or in a rock garden. Regular tulips work well in a mass garden or along borders.
-
Step 3
Plan your tulip garden by grouping colors and sizes to create a fun and unique look. A variety of colors look good together, as does a larger group of all one color. Don't worry about making the colors match if you are using a variety of colors; mix them as you put them in the ground.
-
Step 4
Plant your tulips in the late fall, but get them in before the first ground freeze. October or November are generally good times to plant, regardless of what zone you live in. Plant your bulbs 4 or 5 inches apart and 6 inches below the surface with the pointed side up. Fill in the hole and water thoroughly. Cover the bulbs with a small layer of mulch and leave it until the spring.
-
Step 5
Clear the mulch away from your bulbs in the spring. Water the tulip garden only when leaves appear.
