How to Knit a Fisherman's Rib Pattern

In the fishing community, many men would knit fishing nets, sweaters and hats. Many fishing communities created distinctive patterns that to identify them when a fishing accident occurred. The fisherman's rib pattern is commonly known as the shaker rib.

• Knitting needles
• Yarn

1. Take accurate measurements for hats or sweaters. Select the correct needle size and knit a swatch to check the gauge. Traditionally, the fisherman's rib is knit with wool yarn. Check the pattern for yarn recommendations.

2. Cast on any even number of stitches. Choose a simple cast-on method or a complex cast-on for a specialized border.

3. Purl one row. To purl, insert the right needle in the front of the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the needle away from you. Push the needle back through the yarn to create a loop. Allow the stitch to slide off onto the left needle for a purl stitch.

4. Begin row two by purling 1 and knitting the next stitch into the row below. Repeat this combination of stitches. Purl the last 2 stitches of every row. Continue this cycle of purl 1, knit 1 in the row below. Purl the last 2 stitches until you reach your desired length.

5. Cast off for a finished edge.
