April 15th is the deadline for filing both state and federal taxes. Although everyone must file and pay taxes on that date, you can file an extension to pay taxes. Here's how file an extension for your state taxes.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit your state's website or call over the phone to find out its policy on tax filing extensions.

  2. Step 2

Determine whether you owe or are due a refund. The state treats those who owe taxes differently than those who are due a refund. Even though you may not be ready to file your tax forms, do the financial calculations to determine your tax status category.

  3. Step 3

Pay your taxes by the tax due date. Whether you filed the proper tax forms, you must pay by the due date. Failure to do so can cost you late payment penalties and interest.

  4. Step 4

File an extension whether you owe taxes or not. Most states require you to file an extension form by the tax due date of April 15th, even if you don't owe taxes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some states don't require filing extensions if you don't owe taxes or have filed a Federal extension form that covers the same period.
  • Many states charge a failure-to-file penalty if you don't file your tax returns within six months of the due date.
