How to Use a Beach Umbrella to Prevent Sunburn

If your skin is sensitive and prone to sunburn, the beach umbrella and sunscreen are must-haves to safely enjoy your day on the beach sunburn free. Here's how to use your beach umbrella to prevent sunburn.

1. Purchase a large umbrella. Ensure the umbrella is large enough to cast a shadow that covers your entire body. Providing coverage for your head and upper body doesn't prevent sunburn on your legs.
2. Select the right material. Buy a beach umbrella made from cloth that has a UV-undercoating protection. The minimum SPF number recommended is a protection of SPF of 35. The higher the SPF number, the more protection the umbrella provides. Some umbrellas have an SPF of over 100.
3. Set up your beach umbrella to take advantage of the sun's angle. Place it with the top of the umbrella facing the sun at an angle to produce the longest shadow. As the earth constantly rotates around the sun, you must arrange your umbrella's angle to capture the best shade.
4. Wear sunscreen. Even though you're using a large beach umbrella with a minimum of 35 SPF, you should still wear sunscreen. If you fall asleep under your umbrella and don't wake up to re-arrange its angle, sunscreen is your backup.
