1
Volunteer at a local shelter. Most animal shelters have programs that allow people to volunteer their time to help animals locally. Many shelters are understaffed and your assistance with feeding, walking and playing with the animals is critical to helping them stay socialized and comfortable. There may also be opportunities to help with office work.
-
2
Donate money. All animal shelters and welfare organizations can use monetary donations of any size to bolster their programs. Select an organization or shelter that helps animals locally.

3
Donate wish list items. Find out what the most needed items are at your local shelter. Everyday items, such as paper towel and cleaning and office supplies and pet toys, are always needed. Pick up an extra item during your weekly shopping trip and donate at the end of the month. Another idea to help animals locally is to have a blanket or towel drive and donate the items to the shelter.
-
4
Raise money for a local shelter. You, your club or your school can raise money to help animals at local shelters by having bake sales, car washes, a dog walking service or a book sale.
-
5
Create a backyard habitat for wild animals. If you have the space, you can create a habitat for your wild animal neighbors. The Animal Planet website has many tips and project ideas for a wildlife habit.
-
6
Adopt or foster a homeless pet. If you are looking for an animal friend, check your local animal shelter. Providing a new home to a homeless pet is the best way to help animals locally.
-
7
Be aware of opportunities to help animals in your own neighborhood. Some seniors, or people who are sick or injured, may need a little help caring for their pets. You can help animals locally by being a good neighbor.
