There's always a level of uncertainty when you buy any children's toy. You may wonder if it's appropriate for the age group and you want to avoid buying recalled toys whenever possible. With so many toys on the market, it's hard to know what has been recalled and what hasn't, but there are a few things that you can do to avoid buying recalled toys in the first place.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep up with the recent recalls. Sign up for US Consumer Product Safety Division alerts, so that you can stay on top of the latest toy recalls. Each email gives a description of the toy, as well as a picture and links to find out more information about the specific recall.

  2. Step 2

Stick to name brand toys. While it may seem like the big manufacturers are the ones that have the trouble with recalls, the really dangerous toys are those that are sold under different names. Avoid buying recalled toys by sticking with the major brands. They're usually more responsible about checking for problems and notifying the public should any arise.

  3. Step 3

Pay attention to what you're buying. Even some of the most basic safety tests are often overlooked by the big toy companies. To avoid buying recalled toys, check to make sure that the toy is put together well and there are no loose pieces that a child could choke on. When in doubt, don't buy it.

  4. Step 4

Check the label on art supplies. Art supplies should have the listing ASTM D-4236 somewhere on the package. This means that it's been screened for toxins by a toxicologist, so you know it should be safe for your child.
