How to Ride the Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry connects lower Manhattan with the borough of Staten Island, which lies in the middle of New York Harbor, between New Jersey and the rest of New York City. The line, begun in 1817, runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The 5.2 mile, 25 minute run is free to all.

1. Make your way to Lower Manhattan. The Staten Island Ferry departs from the Whitehall Ferry Terminal, located at Whitehall and South Streets, at the lower tip of Manhattan. The new terminal, opened in early 2007, is connected to a subway station and is a stop on three New York bus lines.
2. Enjoy the free view of New York Harbor. The view from the Staten Island Ferry of the New York skyline, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty is one of the best free attractions in New York City. Sit on the upper deck facing the New Jersey side for the best view.
3. Sip a beer while you ride. The Staten Island Ferry has a concession stand that serves snacks, sandwiches and beer. Enjoy a glass while you take in the view.
4. Explore the Staten Island Museum. Before boarding the return ferry, take a few minutes to visit the Staten Island Museum, just a five minute walk from the St. George ferry terminal. The museum, built in 1917, traced the borough's history from the original Lenape Native American tribes to the present.
5. Attend a special event. The Staten Island Ferry hosts a number of special events throughout the year. Highlights include "Tango on the Ferry," an evening of Argentine dance lessons and the "5 Borough Bike Tour" which includes a ride on the Staten Island Ferry.
