How to Buy a Weighted Training Baseball

While many people are afraid to that weighted balls may cause injury, weighted baseballs can be a great resource for baseball players when used correctly. Whether you're a pitcher, catcher, outfielder or anyone who wants to improve catching and throwing technique, weighted balls can help you develop ball control and technique. Gradually increasing the weight of the ball also builds strength.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what your goal is for using weighted baseballs. If you want to increase throwing and catching technique, look for a variety of weights, both lighter and heavier than the official weight of 5 ounces. If you want to increase strength, look for a set of balls heavier than 5 ounces so that you can gradually increase the weight.

    • 2

Visit a sporting goods store that carries weighted balls. Try out some heavier balls to figure out how heavy you want your target baseball to be. If you buy a 9 ounce ball as your heaviest ball, make sure that you get two or three balls between 5 and 9 ounces so that you can make the weight increase gradually.

    • 3

Decide if you want to purchase weighted balls individually or in a set. Sets typically include either 4, 8 or 9 balls. While they are less expensive per ball, you can expect to pay between $55 and $70 for a complete set of weighted balls ranging from 4 to 12 ounces.

    • 4

Check both online retailers and sporting goods stores in your area for weighted balls. While you may find more products online, local stores may run specials or discounts that you will want to be aware of when shopping. Shop around for deals and know what is included in a set package, like a carrying bag or instructional materials.

    • 5

Check for specialty weighted products like extra heavyweight balls, which may weigh as much as 32 ounces. It isn't recommended that you train with an extra heavyweight ball without sufficient instruction and prior training.

    • 6

Look for instructions to go with your weighted baseballs. If the balls you buy don't come with instructions, look up exercises or ask a coach or trainer what type of exercises to do with the weighted balls. While weighted baseballs are a great tool, you can injure yourself if you don't use them properly.
