Indoor climbing has become a standard activity both for enthusiasts of climbing and as just a fun afternoon out. Indoor climbing gyms are found in most large cities around the country and in many of the smaller cities as well. Even YMCAs in some cities are putting in an indoor climbing wall. To participate in the activity of rock climbing you need to dress properly to allow for flexibility and comfort.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear a comfortable shirt that allows for easy arm movement and doesn't present the problem of snagging on holds or tying up your freedom of movement. Tank tops, close-fitting halters, tucked in t-shirts and sleeveless shirts are great choices.

  2. Step 2

Dress in pants that fit loosely around the legs and allow your movement without difficulty. Jogging pants, sweats, even loose fitting jeans can fit this bill. Some climbers wear cargo pants because of their loose fit and ease of movement.

  3. Step 3

Choose trekking shoes, boots or court shoes. The idea is to have a shoe that provides some support and has a side and bottom that are squared to allow for gripping the rock holds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Virtually all indoor climbing facilities have equipment to rent. Some even provide the safety type equipment with the rental fee. You can rent climbing shoes, which are very tight fitting shoes with rubber that gives high friction and lets you "feel" the rock with your feet. They will also rent harnesses that allow you to tie into the rope to climb safely.
  • Remember that the activity of rock climbing, even in a controlled environment, is a dangerous sport.
