Crochet a tote with trash bags. Recycling materials is one way to protect the environment. Pair your love of the art of crochet with this eco-conscious project. This clever bag made from black trash bags works as a purse or a beach tote. The project works up fairly quickly using the right crochet hook.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet hook size N
  • Black trash bags
  • Scissors
  • Small plastic grocery bags
  1. Step 1

Lay the trash bags out flat and cut off the bottom seams. Cut the tops of the bags so they are straight across. Cut the bags into 1/2 inch wide strips across the width of the bags. Each strip is double in thickness and a continuous loop.

  2. Step 2

Loop one strip through a second strip and pull it tight. Continue until all the loops are joined in one continuous string of plastic "yarn." Roll the plastic yarn into a ball. Continue until the ball is about the size of a large honeydew melon.

  3. Step 3

Chain 37. Half-double crochet in the second chain from the hook working only in the back of the chain and in each remaining chain. Join with a slip stitch to the first half-double crochet for a total of 72 half-double crochets.

  4. Step 4

Chain 1. Half-double crochet in each stitch around and join with a slip stitch to the first half-double crochet. Continue in this manner until the bag is 15 inches long or the desired length.

  5. Step 5

Stop at the side of the bag where the handle is going to be attached, but do not fasten off. Chain the desire length of the handle. Half-double crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain. Slip stitch to the side of the bag.

  6. Step 6

Finish the handle with a row of single crochet. Slip stitch the handle to the other side of the bag. Fasten off and weave in the end. The tote is 12 x 15 inches when complete, but can be made as tall as you like.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use an N hook and a gauge of 3 stitches=1 inch and 4 rows=2 inches. Gauge is not critical and can be adjusted.
  • You can substitute trash bags with plastic bags from your local grocery store. Gather plastic grocery bags of various colors and create a colorful tote.
