When one family member has a substance abuse problem, everyone suffers. Fortunately, there are support groups for not only the addict, but the rest of the family. Adult Children of Alcoholics Anonymous, or ACOA, is a group born out of the Al-Anon support group. The group is free to join and open for anyone that needs it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search for a meeting near you. You can contact your local Alcoholics Anonymous AA and ask about the ACOA meetings. They will direct you to the nearest active group. On the ACOA website, run a search for a local meeting. You can search in a radius around your zip code.

  2. Step 2

Join an online meeting. ACOA does have meetings in the form of chats, email and forums. This is perfect for those who are home bound or who live too far from a meeting.

  3. Step 3

Form your own group. Consult the local AA chapter to gather information about starting your own group. They can help you gather membership and find a meeting place. You can also contact the main branch of ACOA to find out how to help. After forming your group, go on the ACOA website to register so that others can join.

  4. Step 4

Join Al-Anon. You will definitely find other adult children of alcoholics in the group. Al-Anon also has local as well as online meeting groups. You will find much of the same support here that is in the ACOA group.
