The Dot Stitch is a knitting technique to add to any simple knitting project. The Dot Stitch is a knitting bobble, or technique in which a single stitch is increased into several stitches forming a raised texture. The effect of the Dot Stitch is subtle and it produces an interesting and textured pattern. Once you know your knitting basics, it's a great way to challenge your beginner skills.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

Knit a few regular rows to get your swatch started.

  2. Step 2

Start a row with a dot by knitting 1 stitch, then purling 1 stitch and knitting 3 stitches to create the dot. Repeat the purl 1 knit 3 across the row.

  3. Step 3

Finish the row by purling 1 stitch and knitting 1 stitch.

  4. Step 4

Purl 1 row in between rows of dots stitches.

  5. Step 5

Start your next row of dot stitches by knitting 3 stitches and purling 1. Repeat this pattern across the row as you did with the first row of dots. This will create an alternating pattern with your first row of dot stitches.

  6. Step 6

Finish this row by knitting 3 stitches.

  7. Step 7

Purl another row to separate the previous row of dot stitches from your next row of dots.

  8. Step 8

Repeat, following the pattern for your first row of dots and alternating the 2 types of dot stitch rows. Remember to purl a row between each row of dot stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't pull your stitches too tight or leave them too loose and open. A very tight knit makes doing a new stitch difficult, especially if you're a beginner, but a knit that is too loose will inhibit your ability to see what the bobble looks like and track your progress.
