How to Stick to an Exercise Routine

One of the most difficult parts of getting fit is sticking to a new exercise routine. During the first flush of enthusiasm, it seems you can't get to the gym early enough in the morning or quickly enough after work. Too soon, though, that enthusiasm often dims and you need to find new motivation. It is possible. You can find the motivation you need to succeed with your exercise routine.

Instructions

    • 1

Set manageable goals. If your goals are unrealistic, you will have difficulty maintaining your motivation. A realistic goal of dropping one clothing size or losing eight pounds in a month will help you stay motivated because you'll be able to see your progress.

    • 2

Break your long term goals into shorter daily or weekly goals. Then be sure to pat yourself on the back when you reach your smaller goals. Positive motivation works well to keep you on track with your exercise routine.

    • 3

Find a workout partner. Although you might be tempted to skip your next exercise session, you will be more likely to put on your sweats and work out if you don't want to disappoint your running or gym friend.

    • 4

Choose an exercise routine that you enjoy. If you hate to sweat, don't start running or join an aerobics class, try swimming. If you don't like working out inside, try running or biking or hiking. It will be much easier to stick with a routine that you enjoy.

    • 5

Treat yourself. When you've managed to maintain your motivation and stick with your routine for a month or six weeks, buy yourself a treat. Buy yourself smaller treats more often if this method of motivation works well for you.

    • 6

Start again. If you succumb to temptation and miss a few exercise sessions, forgive yourself and start again. Remember that you are human and give yourself a little leeway.
