Your love your cozy home until the wind picks up. Then you feel the drafts coming in the windows and the doors. The cold air sends your heating bill up and you just want to keep the wind out. Follow these tips to windproof your home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Weather strips
  • Door seals
  • Foam insulation
  • Heating gun
  • Plastic shrink wrap
  • Draft stoppers

Step1
Replace any damaged doors or seal up any holes. Remove worn door seals and weather strips around a door. Put new strips on to keep the wind out.
Step2
Windproof your windows. Use double-paned windows. Replace old windows and replace old window seals. Remove window trim on the inside of the windows. Look for cracks and feel for drafts. Spray foam insulation into the cracks to seal from the wind. Replace the trim.
Step3
Use a heating gun to shrink wrap plastic to the inside of your windows. You can still see out the window and the wind can't get in.
Step4
Check your dryer vent cover. Make sure it is not missing or damaged. Check that no louvers are missing from the cover.
Step5
Replace your garage door seals if they are warn or missing. Wind can get in through the garage and create cold inside the house.
Step6
Use draft stops to block the wind coming in under your doors. You can make them with old scraps of material and stuffing or you can buy them at a home decorating store or a department store.
Step7
Check your roof shingles before winter. Strong winds can rip them off so you want to make sure they are nailed in tightly to keep the wind and rain out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Walk around the house with a lit candle. The flame will move whenever there is a draft.
