You can go to the bait store and buy minnows, but you can also find them free right there where you fish. You can easily make a minnow trap with limited supplies. Just carry it with you when you go fishing and trap your bait.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large sheet of wire screen
  • Thin cord or wire
  • Ice pick
  • Fishing sinkers
  1. Step 1

Roll the hardware cloth into a conical shape. Trim it to accommodate the depth of water you are working with and the number of minnows you want to catch.

  2. Step 2

Tie the cone shut on the side. Poke an ice pick through the holes in the screen wire and run a thin cord or wire through them. Pull them all the way through and tie them shut.

  3. Step 3

Attach fishing sinkers to the end of the cone so that it drags on the bottom of the lake or river bed. Minnows tend to hover near the gravel at the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Make a handle for the minnow trap. Use a heavy cord or string. Fasten it to each side of the minnow trap

  5. Step 5

Toss the trap into the water. Let it sink to the bottom, and then drag it through the water, scooping up minnows as you go. The screen allows the water to pass through, but not the minnows.

Tips & Warnings
  • Toss back the minnows you don't use. You can always catch more when you fish again, but there's no reason to let them die.
