Cruising along on a Sunday afternoon in a pontoon boat can be fun, relaxing and great way to spend your time. Whether the boat is used for skiing, fishing or as a party boat, determining the type of boat you want to buy ahead of time is important.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Calculate the estimated cost of a pontoon boat before buying and make sure you are financially capable of doing so before shopping around.

  2. Step 2

Determine what size boat you are looking to buy. If you mainly want the boat for short cruises with just you and one other person, or perhaps for fishing, a smaller size will do you fine. Larger pontoon boats are ideal for a bigger crowd and longer cruises.

  3. Step 3

Shop around at the local boat dealerships. Look at what they have to offer and ask questions regarding financing. If you plan on using your bank in acquiring a loan, now is the time to inquire on what they can offer and the procedure you need to follow.

  4. Step 4

Decide where you will store a pontoon boat. If it is not at your own home, ask about docking cost and the monthly rental fee that will be required.

  5. Step 5

Think about where you will be using the pontoon boat. More than likely it will be on a large lake or river. Determine if you are aware of the boat access ramps and rules and regulations that go along with owning a boat.

  6. Step 6

Decide on the boat you want and take it for a test run. Ask others to accompany you out on the water and determine the comfort of your guests. Drive the boat, experiment with the controls and accessories to see how well you like what that particular boat has to offer. You may have to drive several before making a final decision.
