Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your steering wheel. Add an inch to this measurement for the seam allowance.

    • 2

Cut a piece of denim from the leg of the old jeans. This piece of fabric must measure the length you determined in Step 1 and should be 7 ½ inches wide.

    • 3

Make two pieces of elastic. Each piece needs to be 13 inches long.

    • 4

Sew the narrow ends together in a ½ inch seam. Place the circular piece of fabric around your steering wheel to see if it's snug. If not, take up a little bit more seam.

    • 5

Fold a 1 3/8 inch hem on each side of the steering wheel cover. Pin. Stitch close to the edge of each hem. Leave 2 inches open on each hem to thread elastic into.

    • 6

Use a safety pin as a bodkin to thread the elastic into the hem. Be careful not to let the end of the elastic get lost in the hem. As you pull the first end through, pin it to the tail end that should still be sticking out. Overlap the two ends and sew in place. Run the second piece of elastic into the second hem and repeat the sewing process.

    • 7

Slip the jeans over the steering wheel. It's important for safety reasons that the steering wheel cover fits snugly on the steering wheel.
