How to Make a Dove Nesting Cone
Doves don't nest in the holes of trees or in boxes. They attempt to build their own nest in trees but these are often flimsy and get blown away by the wind. You can help them out by making a wire mesh nesting cone and placing it in a tree or bush. Follow these steps to build a dove nesting cone.
Things You'll Need
- 1/4-inch screen wire
- Compass
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Twist ties
- Electrical tape
- Roofing nails
- Ladder
- Mirror
Instructions

1
Cut the screen wire into a 12-inch circle. Use a compass to make a perfect circle. Be careful when cutting the screen wire so you don't slice your finger.
-
2
Remove a 4-inch wide pie shaped piece from the circle. Overlap the screen wire to close the cut.

3
Fasten the dove nesting cone closed using the twist ties. Apply electrical tape to the bottom of the cone to prevent it from opening.
-
4
Put the dove nesting cone in a shady tree. It must be at least 6 feet above the ground so that it is not at risk to be raided by predators. Make sure that the cone isn't blocked by tree limbs or branches.
-
5
Secure the dove nesting cone in the tree using roofing nails or staples. Bend over the cut wire that surrounds the cone so that it doesn't scratch the dove.
-
6
Stick a mirror in the tree that points towards the dove nesting cone. This will allow you to easily see the eggs in the nesting cone.
