Unlike most handlebars, bullhorn handlebars curve away from the rider. They are usually seen on single-speed and fixed-gear bikes. Bullhorn handlebars can be somewhat costly, but you can make your own for a lot less money. Follow these steps to learn how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate some old bicycle handlebars such as drop bars. You can always find these in recycled parts bins, and they're usually free.

  2. Step 2

Measure and mark one side of the handlebars where you want to cut. Secure the handlebars in a vice grip and spray with a lubricant.

  3. Step 3

Cut the handlebar with a hacksaw. Be sure to wear protective equipment when doing this so you don't get metal shavings in your eyes or on your skin.

  4. Step 4

Line the cut piece of handlebar up with the opposite side and cut it. This ensures that both sides of the handlebars will be even.

  5. Step 5

Use a grinder and smooth the cut edges. Remove the sharp edges from the inside of the handlebars with a deburring tool.

  6. Step 6

Put the handlebars on your bike stem and tighten the bolts. Install any brake levers or gear shifters.

  7. Step 7

Wrap cork tape around the end of the handlebars. Stick the loose end of the cork tape into the handlebars. Use a mallet to put plugs into the end of the handlebars.
