Hearing the words mold and mildew make homeowners cringe. The cost to have professionals go through your home and apply toxic chemicals to the problem areas is not something to look forward to. A safe alternative is to make your own all-natural cleaning substance that will work just as well, if not better, than the professional products.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Combine two teaspoons tea tree oil with two cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake to mix and apply to mold and mildew spots. Leave mixture visibly wet on areas. Do not rinse. Repeat as necessary. The tea tree oil will last indefinitely in the spray bottle.
Step2
Use undiluted vinegar or lemon juice. A completely natural, non-toxic mildew and mold remover is undiluted vinegar or undiluted lemon juice mixed with a pinch of salt. Mix well and apply to problem areas. Dispose of leftover mixture when application is done.
Step3
Mix one teaspoon borax, three tablespoons vinegar and two cups hot water in a spray bottle as another alternative. Shake to mix. Spray on problem areas and scrub to remove the mold. After mold is removed, spray more solution on area to prevent new mold from growing. If mold is resistant to solution, apply pure borax. Allow borax to rest of problem area for a few minutes before scrubbing. Dispose of left over mixture.
Step4
Keep problem areas ventilated and exposed to sunlight to deter mold from returning.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little bit goes a long way. Also, tea tree oil's scent is heavy, but disappears completely over a couple of days.
