Creosote is released when wood burns. It clings to the inner walls of your chimney and can cause a chimney fire. Creosote can't be removed with a wire brush alone, but a chimney sweep can get rid of it with chemicals and brushes. Proper chimney service can protect your family from fire and carbon monoxide poisoning, So, it's important to choose a professional. Here's what you have to know.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what your needs are. If you're having smoke problems, check that the damper is open and the wood isn't damp. If smoke is still coming in, get a chimney sweep to check things out.

  2. Step 2

Check in with the Chimney Safety Institute of America for references. There are 1900 certified chimney sweeps in North America. You can find a listing on their website (see Resources below) or by calling (800) 536-0118.

  3. Step 3

Get referrals from neighbors and co-workers. There's more demand now for chimney sweeps than there used to be, resulting in some fly-by-night operations. Find out who has a good reputation.

  4. Step 4

Ask for the company's credentials. Find out how much training the sweep has completed. A sweep should be part of a trade organization or be certified. Ask if the sweep uses video scanning equipment to evaluate potential damage in the flue. Find out how long the company has been in business.

  5. Step 5

Act early to avoid the busy season. Chimney sweeps get bogged down with appointments as winter approaches. You may have to wait a few months for an appointment.
