How to Add Color to a PowerPoint Shape

Using the Drawing toolbar, you can add a shape to your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. When the shape is added, it will be filled with the default color that was used last in PowerPoint. If you want to change the color filling the shape, follow the steps below.

      Start Microsoft PowerPoint and open an existing presentation, or start a new presentation that you can use to practice adding color shapes.

      Select the shape you would like to fill with a color by clicking on it.

      Verify the Drawing toolbar is open by choosing "View," pointing to "Toolbars" and locating the "Drawing" option. If there is a checkmark in front of "Drawing," the toolbar is already open.

      Click the arrow beside the "Fill Color" button, which is represented by a paint can that is tipping over.

      Choose one of the colors shown, or click on "More Fill Colors" to open the "Colors" dialog box.

      Choose the "Standard" tab to select one of the preset color options, or choose from the "Custom" tab to create a custom color to fill the shape.

      Click on the color you wish to fill the shape with and click the "OK" button to close the "Colors" dialog box and fill your shape with color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Insert a shape into PowerPoint by choosing the "AutoShape" button on the Drawing toolbar, pointing to the category and clicking on the shape you want to add. Click anywhere on a slide to insert the shape onto the slide.
