A fashion editor is the person who decides what is reported on in a newspaper or magazine when it comes to fashion. The editors are normally sent many items or proposals from companies asking the publication to write about their products. The fashion editor must understand the publication's readers and have a well-informed plan for the magazine or newspaper.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Enroll in journalism courses at a college or university. These journalism courses not only look good on a resume but also give you the basics you need to become a fashion editor.
Step2
Join your school newspaper and write about as much fashion as possible. When the opportunity arrives, ask to become the fashion editor. Profile unknown designers and cover fashion shows. This allows you to create your own style as well as make contacts in the fashion industry.
Step3
Find a job after graduation working for a magazine or a newspaper. You may have to work up to the fashion editor position, but try to get into a job where you are interacting with the fashion world.
Step4
Move up the ladder accordingly. Try for promotions as much as possible and apply for other publications. Having journalism experience helps you land jobs at bigger papers and magazines.
Step5
Ask at least once a month to see if your preferred publication is hiring. You can find opportunities by searching diligently. You may have to work in another position for 3 to 5 years before you find a fashion editor position available for you.
