Rose wedding favors are a tradition for many American weddings. Rose wedding favors are small rosebuds made out of satin and filled with birdseed. These favors are given to guests of the wedding. At the end of the ceremony, guests throw the birdseed as the bride and groom leave the service. This wedding favor design is for one rosebud. Multiply it to match or exceed the number of guests at the wedding.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 4-1/2-by-5 inch piece of bias satin
  • Thread, same color as the satin
  • 1 needle
  • 18-gauge stem wire
  • Satin rose leaves
  • Green floral tape
  • Birdseed

Step1
Fold the satin piece in half lengthwise so the dimensions of the folded piece are 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches.
Step2
Sew the unfolded edge of the material with a 1/4-inch seam. This creates a tube. Turn the fabric right side out so the sewn edge is on the inside.
Step3
Make a gathering stitch at one end of the tube with a needle and thread. This end eventually connects to the wire.
Step4
Bend one end of the 18-gauge wire into a small hook. Feed the wire into the gathered end of the material tube. Pull the gathering stitch tight around the stem. Wrap the thread around the stem and the material several times to hold them in place. Tighten the thread and remove any excess thread that hangs down.
Step5
Start wrapping the wire with fabric tape. Begin at the bottom and work your way to the top of the rose wedding favor. Stretch the tape as you wrap. Add leaves to the stem in the desired places and continue wrapping to the top.
Step6
Place the birdseed into the satin tube. Do not fill it all the way to the top. A small amount of bird seed is enough. It works the best when the tube is less than half full.
Step7
Twist the end of the tube to hold the birdseed in. Tuck the twisted end of the tube inside the rose to create the rose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each rose takes 5 to 10 minutes to create.
  • The guests at the wedding simply shake the rose to release the birdseed. Test your rose wedding favor before making a lot of them to make sure they work properly.
