When a young woman is faced with the decision of going through sorority rush, she may be confused about the differences among various sororities. It is helpful to know the various histories and philanthropies unique to each sorority. The Alpha Chi Omega sorority includes famous alumnae such as Condoleezza Rice and Miss America 2005 Deidre Downs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Educate yourself about the history of Alpha Chi Omega. AXΩ was founded on October 15, 1885, at Indiana's DePauw University. The dean of the School of Music invited seven women to form a society. The seven original founders were Anna Allen, Amy DuBois, Olive Burnett, Bertha Deniston, Nellie Gamble, Estelle Leonard and Bessie Grooms.
Step2
Observe Alpha Chi Omega's commitment to philanthropic endeavors. The sorority has two main national causes: a desire to end domestic violence and support its victims, and the MacDowell Colony, a musician's studio in New Hampshire at which artists are free to pursue their creative work without interruption. Individual sororities may add local altruistic programs of their own choosing.
Step3
Study the symbology of Alpha Chi Omega. The sorority's symbol is the lyre (an ancient Greek musical instrument). Pearls are AXΩ's gem. Their flower is the red carnation. The sorority colors are scarlet and olive. Alpha Chi Omega's open motto is "Together let us seek the heights."
Step4
Contact your local Alpha Chi Omega chapter for more information about their rush recruitment process. Some chapters have rush during the fall; some offer recruitment during the spring or winter semesters. Chapters may have GPA requirements or mandatory housing requirements (some chapters may require you to live in the sorority house; others may require you to live on campus). For a complete list of AXΩ chapters in the United States, visit the AXΩ official website (see Resources below).
