Trigeminal neuralgia is caused by damage to the trigeminal nerve located in the face. The nerve misfires and causes shooting pain in the face. The pain is usually on one side and comes and goes. The severity of the pain varies as does the frequency. Some people experience pain daily, while others may go several weeks without pain. There are effective treatments for trigeminal neuralgia.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Obtain a diagnosis. Many people with pain in their face assume it is caused by a problem with a tooth and therefore may leave it untreated for some time. If your dentist rules out a dental problem, see a physician. Your doctor will perform an exam and may order additional tests such as a CT scan or MRI.
Step2
Use medication. Some medications used to treat trigeminal neuralgia block pain signals to the brain. Anticonvulsant medications or muscle relaxants may be prescribed. Some medications may have side effects such as sleepiness. Speak with your doctor about ways to reduce side effects.
Step3
Learn about complementary and alternative medicine. Consider ways to reduce pain such as acupuncture and massage. Alternative ways to treat pain may not be effective for all people. Keep in mind they can usually be used in conjunction with conventional treatments such as medications.
Step4
Get an alcohol injection. Although it is only temporary and may need to be repeated, it can reduce pain. Alcohol is injected under the skin and numbs the areas where there is pain.
Step5
Have surgery. If medication is not effective in controlling pain, surgery may be an option. Surgery will destroy the part of the trigeminal nerve that is causing the pain. There are different types of surgery, including microvascular decompression and balloon compression. Keep in mind surgery may result in numbness to the face that may be permanent.
Step6
Contact the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association. They provide information on treatment options and research. The association can also provide information for resources and support in your area. Ways to cope with the emotional issues of dealing with pain can also be found on their website.
