How to Hike Mount Kathadin

Mount Kathadin is located in Maine's Baxter State Park. Mount Kathadin offers a difficult hike with a summit of 4,000 feet. It takes approximately 10 hours to climb the 9.6 miles. Although a bit off the beaten path, this state park is worth the extra effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan ahead by reserving a spot in the park to stay well in advance of your visit. The park is incredibly busy in peak season, and it isn't always possible to camp.

    • 2

Wear light layers and comfortable supportive footwear. Make sure you have water, snacks, a flashlight and a first-aid kit with you in your gear.

    • 3

Pay the fee, in cash, at the gate. Fees vary depending on the number in your party and are more expensive for out-of-state visitors. The park opens at 6 a.m.

    • 4

Find out what the park rangers have declared for the day's "Class Day" designation. You need this information before you set off on your hike. Rangers will make this information available at 7 a.m.

    • 5

Sign in and out when you hike in the park. Make sure you're safe at all times; Baxter State Park can be a dangerous place if you're not careful or experienced.

    • 6

Carry out all your trash, keep to the trails and watch the weather. If you see bad weather rolling in, turn around and head back down the trail.

    • 7

Be careful when you climb. There are difficult spots along the trail. Knife Edge is a tricky spot where the trail narrows along the mountain side. Keep an eye out for wildlife as well. Moose, bear and other animals live in the park, too; be respectful of their habitat while you hike.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to bring a "wag bag" since there are no bathrooms along the trail. The park's carry-out rule refers to waste of all kinds.

  • Dogs aren't allowed in the park.
