How to Be a Skee Ball Champion

Skee ball was invented in 1909 and has since become one of the most popular amusement games in the country. Similar to bowling, skee ball involves rolling a small wooden ball up an alley to score points. With great skill and a little luck, you can become a skee ball champion.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the appropriate skee ball lane for you. If you're right-handed, you'll want to stand to the left so you can roll the balls up the center of the lane. If you're left-handed, you'll want to stand to the right for the same reason. You may also want to consider where other players are standing to avoid being crowded or bumped.

    • 2

Insert the appropriate amount of money to begin a skee ball game. Different arcades will require quarters, tokens, or the swipe of a prepaid card as payment. After you've done this, eight wooden balls about the size of baseballs will roll down a shoot for you to bowl up the alley and score points.

    • 3

Roll each ball up the alley, which is angled slightly upward. Skee balls are meant to be rolled and not thrown. Put enough force behind each ball to ramp it over the bumper at the end of the alley and launch it up onto the scoring board.

    • 4

Score points by ramping each ball into a ring with a designated score on it. While the points will vary from alley to alley, generally the larger the ring, the lower the number of points scored. Most alleys will have five rings with ascending point values in the middle, with the least points in the lowest and largest ring and the most points in the highest and smallest ring. Some alleys will also have two even smaller rings in the upper corners of the scoring board worth much more than any in the center.

    • 5

Take some chances and try to put the ball in the rings worth the most points. Obviously the larger rings are the easiest to hit but are worth lower point values. Use your strength and aim to launch the ball into those higher rings to score more points.

    • 6

Practice. The more you play skee ball, the more you'll get a feel for how hard you need to roll the ball to get those higher scores.

    • 7

Join or start a league in your area. Skee ball leagues are popping up around the country, or you can start one at your favorite arcade. This will give you the opportunity to defeat the competition and become a true skee ball champion.
