How to Buy Graduated Heel Tap Shoes

Graduated tap shoes are the next step to learning to dance in a high-heeled tap shoe. A graduated heel looks much like the average older little girl's Easter shoes. Instead of the very low flat heel of beginning tap shoes, a graduated heel is typically a 2-inch raised block heel that helps the dancer to master the balance and timing required to tap in higher heeled shoes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure your foot. There is nothing worse than trying to dance in shoes that pinch your toes or fly off with every step. Take the time to get measured before you try on tap shoes to get the correct size and width.

  2. Step 2

Shop at your local specialty dance store. Though many major chain stores now carry basic tap shoes, graduated heel tap shoes are best found at a dance shop. Ask the salesperson for help if you can't find them, as they may need to be ordered from the manufacturer.

  3. Step 3

Order online. There are many online dance stores offering a variety of graduated heel tap shoes. You can even choose the type of taps you'd like to have added to them and they'll arrive ready to hit the floor.

  4. Step 4

Consider buying secondhand. There are dance consignment shops all over where you can find gently used graduated tap shoes, which is great for kids that may only get one season's wear from their shoes. Check the local paper, or go in the Internet to search for used graduated tap shoes at a great price.
