How to Get Through a Gallbladder Attack
The pain of a gallbladder attack has been compared to the pain of labor--but without the happy ending. It's so painful that you're not only ready to have your gallbladder removed, but are almost considering taking it out yourself. Before you reach for the carving knife, try to lessen the pain with a few home remedies.

1
Try over-the-counter painkillers. If they don't help, contact your doctor and ask if there is something he can prescribe that can help you.
-
2
Use a heating pad. Place the pad on your right side just under your rib cage so it covers part of your abdomen and part of your back. If you have two heating pads, you may want to place one on your abdomen and one behind your back.

3
Walk. The pain is sometimes lessened with movement. Try pacing.
-
4
Avoid eating. This will just make the attack worse by causing the gallbladder to contract. Drinking water may help, however.

Tips & Warnings
You can try to avoid another gallbladder attack by sticking to a lowfat diet.
See a doctor immediately if the attack lasts more than five hours, if you vomit, develop a fever or jaundice, have clay-colored stools or if the pain is unbearable.
Even if the pain isn't too bad or resolves quickly, see your doctor. Many medical problems, some life-threatening, can cause symptoms similar to that of a gallbladder attack.
